Remembering an Austin Icon – Fran’s Hamburgers South Congress

Wednesday (1/21/15) was a bittersweet moment for many Austinites, as we said goodbye to the building that housed the original Fran’s Hamburgers on South Congress. As many may know, this location closed in 2013 when Fran retired (after 40 years in business). Several members of the Junk family were present alongside taco lovers and dedicated Fran’s fans to bid the iconic site farewell.

Ms. Junk was kind enough to share some of her own personal archival photos (below) of the location through the years, and the family who kept it all going. “I feel proud, I feel proud of Austin period,” said Junk in an interview with KVUE News. “…Whatever changes, I’ll change with the times.”

Torchy’s Tacos will transform the beloved burgery into a flagship restaurant to include sidewalk seating, (some) onsite parking, and damn good tacos. Estimated to open later in 2015.
